The Family Stallone (Paramount+), a new fly-on-the-wall show featuring Sylvester Stallone and his family, the actor explains why he has signed up to this. “I thought, ‘Oh my God, my daughters are grown up. Wouldn’t it be great if I could spend some serious time with them where they couldn’t escape?’”It’s also just a teeny bit possible that Stallone was sweet-talked into this by his three daughters, Sistine, Sophia and Scarlet, because they’ve seen the Kardashians become insanely famous and would like a piece of that.
But what stops this from being a soullessly cynical enterprise is the sheer likeability of Stallone himself, and the fact that the family plainly adore one another. Stallone’s wife, Jennifer, is also in it, and you’ll need a moment to get your head around this because she looks almost the same age as her three daughters. That’s the California lifestyle for you.
She and Stallone seem to have produced remarkably unbratty offspring, although your tolerance of them will depend on how sensitive you are to the sound of their voices and how funny you find their “pranks” – such as the one where Sistine pretends, at Stallone’s birthday party, that she is expecting a baby and he’s about to become a grandfather for the first time. Stallone turns out to be very funny, and sharper than his image might suggest. Paramount (which has also made this series as a bit of cross-promotion for Tulsa King, the comedy-drama in which Stallone plays a mafia capo banished to Oklahoma) presumably hopes the show will be a hit with the Instagram generation.
