The Sir John Stirling Maxwell in Glasgow will cease trading by March 26, though an exact closing date has yet to be announced. The pub is located on Kilmarnock Road in Shawlands, and was named after philanthropist Sir John Maxwell Stirling-Maxwell.
JD Wetherspoon previously announced that 19 pubs have been sold off and 35 others have been put on the market, with the Sir John Stirling Maxwell being the latest closure.
Two other hostelries in Scotland are currently for sale on a freehold basis. The Saltoun Inn in Fraserburgh and The Cross Keys in Peebles are available for a guide price of £650,000 and £600,000 respectively.
As reported by The Mirror, pubs are battling rising costs that would have been passed to customers under normal circumstances. However, there has also been lower demand from customers due to the cost of living crisis.
Wetherspoons announced in November 2022 that its sales had fallen by 1.1 per cent, compared with trading before the pandemic in 2019. Finding buyers for many of the properties up for sale has reportedly been a challenge for the pub chain.
A JD Wetherspoon spokesman commented: "Only one other pub The Sir John Stirling Maxwell in Glasgow had been added to the previously published list."
