Insiders say the drugs – understood to be 10kg (22lb) of cocaine – belonged to a crime family from the area.
One local said: "There was a loud screeching and the car stopped and two young guys got out.
"One of them was carrying a large black bin bag that was rammed full of something heavy.
"It was so heavy he struggled to carry it. They ran in different directions.
"Within minutes, the police cordoned the area off while they searched the car and surrounding area but no one was found."
A source said: "It's believed the men were in the middle of dropping drugs off.
"They spotted police passing them and thought they'd been rumbled.
"The driver knew he had to get them as far away from them as possible.
"They took off at speed along streets he appeared to know well.
"They managed to lose them and then ditch the car and the drugs. It's a miracle they didn't get caught."
