‘Paint’ Star Owen Wilson Talks Emulating Bob Ross in IFC Comedy, Finding Calmness in Crayons

Scott Huver After starring in “Paint” as a Bob Ross-esque (but far more angry and tortured) paint instructor, Owen Wilson admits he’s warmed to finding his own sense of zen calm — not with watercolors and brushes, but with Crayolas. “When my boys were little, at restaurants I’d give them crayons and try to calm them down, but I think that maybe adults should be doing that, too,” Wilson told Variety at the premiere of the IFC film at the Ace Hotel on Thursday. ”I don’t know why we ever stop doing that, because there is something really nice about trying to create something.” “I guess there’s that Picasso quote: ‘I want to spend the rest of my life learning to paint like a child,’” he mused. “Not worrying about anything and just expressing yourself — that feels good.”

Neon Buys Anne Hathaway, Thomasin McKenzie Thriller ‘Eileen’

Brent Lang Executive Editor Neon has purchased North American rights to “Eileen,” an adaptation of Ottessa Moshfegh’s acclaimed novel of the same title. The movie debuted to strong reviews at Sundance, but its high price tag, said by sources to be in the range of $15 million, made it difficult for the film to score a distribution deal. It languished on the market for roughly two months as several studios kicked the tires. This despite the combined star wattage of “Jojo Rabbit’s” Thomasin McKenzie and Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway and a twisty plot. The rest of the ensemble includes Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland, and Owen Teague. William Oldroyd (“Lady Macbeth”) directs from a script by Moshfegh who adapted “Eileen” with Luke Goebel. Neon will release the film theatrically this fall.

Warner Bros. Circling Nancy Meyers Film After Its Exit From Netflix

Just days after parting ways with Netflix, Nancy Meyers next movie has found a new home as sources tell Deadline Warner Bros. is in early talks to acquire the project. Sources stress no deal is done and they are exploratory talks but add there is something to it and discussions have begun on various details about project. Deadline reported on Tuesday that the film was leaving Netflix after the studio pulled the plug due to budget concerns. Meyers moved quickly to take the project out to other studios and Warner Bros. is looking like the front-runner to land the film. Meyers will write and direct the project but what is unknown is if the all-star cast will still be joining. Meyers was in talks with Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz, Owen Wilson and Michael Fassbender to star but given that was the plan when Meyers had a much larger budget it is unknown if those actors stay committed to the project.

Nancy Meyers’ New Rom-Com With Scarlett Johansson, Michael Fassbender & More Searching For New Home After Netflix Bails

When it was announced that Netflix was going to foot the $130 million bill for the new Nancy Meyers rom-com with an A-list cast, there were many (myself included) who thought it was a bit crazy. That’s a superhero film budget, not necessarily the type of money you throw at an adult-focused romantic comedy.

Nancy Meyers rom-com not moving forward at Netflix: report

Hollywood Reporter. The company gave her a cap of $130 million, according to the report, but the filmmaker requested $150 million. The flick had Scarlett Johansson, Penélope Cruz, Michael Fassbender and Owen Wilson in talks to star. The name was allegedly titled “Paris Paramount” and Meyers was set to write, direct and produce the feature. The project was announced last year and the plot would have chronicled a young writer-director who falls head over heels for a movie producer. The Post reached out to Meyers for comment. The synopsis is semi-autobiographical for Meyers, as she was married to director Charles Shyer for almost two decades. The duo worked on a few iconic comedies over the years such as “Private Benjamin,” “Baby Boom” and “Father of the Bride.”The movie would have been Meyer’s first flick since the 2015 Anne Hathaway rom-com “The Intern.”In December 2022, Meyers responded to rumors about a sequel to her much-loved 2006 film, “The Holiday.”But she shot down any chatter about a second installment on social media at the time, saying: “So many DM’s about this — sorry but it’s not true.” It was reported previously that the possible sequel had returning stars Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Jack Black on board, with production beginning earlier this year. The “Titanic” star, 47, also separately denied that there was a sequel for “The Holiday” in place.“I read something about that, but it’s the first I’ve heard of it,” Winslet told People at the time. “I promise you not an agent or a representative or anyone from the first one around has had any conversation with me about that.

Netflix over budget concerns. News that the project is being shelved comes following reports that A-listers Scarlett Johansson, Penélope Cruz, Owen Wilson and Michael Fassbender were circling the lead roles in the film. Netflix was backing the movie, which was announced in April 2022 and greenlit with a price tag well over $100 million, a source confirms to Variety. (Industry newsletter Puck reported that the film would cost $130 million to produce). It’s not clear how much of the budget would’ve been devoted to designing an immaculate kitchen, a staple in the Nancy Meyers Cinematic Universe.

Netflix Pulls Plug On Nancy Meyers’ New Project Due To Budget Issue

Following news last week that Netflix and director Nancy Meyers were at crossroads over the budget on her next film, sources close to the situation say the streamer has decided to part ways with the project. Deadline reported last week that Scarlett Johansson, Owen Wilson, Penelope Cruz and Michael Fassbender were in talks to star but that the budget, which sources say was coming in around $130 million, was causing issues. Sources now say, that while the studio was fine with $130 million, Meyers was still fighting for $150 million, with $80 million of that going to above the line costs. With both sides refusing to budge on the budget, sources say Netflix was leaning toward fully moving off the film over the weekend with the plug ultimately getting pulled this morning.

Owen Wilson Goes Full Bob Ross in Trailer for Art Comedy ‘Paint’ (Video)

The hook of IFC’s “Paint” seems to be “What if Bob Ross was challenged for public broadcasting painting supremacy by a younger and, yes, more inclusive artist?” Think “All About Eve” or “Showgirls,” in this case offering a set-in-their-ways veteran on-television painter and art instructor being usurped by a younger, more exciting upstart. Owen Wilson isn’t literally playing late painter Bob Ross, who died at the age of 52 in 1995. However, at least some of the comedy offered up in the latest trailer for “Paint” is contingent upon audiences being somewhat aware of the beloved, soft-spoken artist.
