This time a year ago Rico Lewis hadn't had a sniff of the Manchester City first team. He had hardly even played for the Under-21s given his tender years and was instead captaining the Under-18s to league title glory.
Now he is the breakout star of the season. He's dazzled while playing an incredibly difficult position given to him by Pep Guardiola with remarkable assuredness and intelligence. The 'inverted full-back' position is challenging as it tasks the player to not only complete their defensive full-back duties but also, when the team is in possession, to come into the midfield to offer more passing options and maintain control of matches. It's so difficult that it took Cancelo months to get to grips with it and he nearly left much sooner than he eventually did, with speculation he could depart just six months after his arrival from Juventus.

Lewis, though, has taken to the role as if it's the most natural thing in the world despite only turning 18 in November and having just a handful of starts to his name. The local hero returned to the side in the 4-1 win over Bournemouth and once again had Guardiola praising his abilities.
After the match, Lewis moved to explain his role. He said: “It’s not a normal full back role and it’s not a normal midfielder role either. It’s kind of in between.
"It depends on the opposition for where I place myself. It’s massively about counter attacks and trying to control the game in the midfield. Sometimes I can be closer in the middle where I can get
