Police Scotland have launched an investigation after JK Rowling was threatened on Twitter by a man who "wanted to kill her with a hammer" over her views on gender reforms.
The Harry Potter author took to social media to reveal an individual had published a voice note in Gaelic, threatening to kill her on January 19. Since the tweet was published she claimed the person responsible had been identified.
Ms Rowling wrote: “The charmer who’s been publicly advocating for a car to be driven into Posie Parker’s rally, who’s posted recordings of himself saying he wants to kill Rosie Duffield with a gun and me with a hammer, appears to have been identified. Social media’s fun til it isn’t, eh, brave boy?”
Officers are probing the threats made towards Ms Rowling, who lives in Edinburgh, after she argued with a Twitter user about gender reform. Police are also investigating a separate tweet made by the same account, describing a fantasy about driving a car into gender-critical feminists attending the Let Women Speak Rally in Glasgow on February 5.
The account and tweets have now been deleted.
A police spokesperson said: “We can confirm that we have received a report of online threats being made. Officers are carrying out enquiries.”
