Piers Morgan’s departure from Good Morning Britain – on a day when parties were illegal. The social care minister, who had already had a notorious run-in with the presenter, sent a message to Matt Hancock on March 9, 2021. The news had just broken that Morgan was leaving the ITV show following comments he made about the Duchess of Sussex.
“How about we celebrate the departure of Piers at/after our team meeting tmr pm? Just a thought,” she told the then health secretary. Mr Hancock replied: “Perfect. ”Britain was still in its third lockdown at the point the messages were exchanged, and social gatherings were limited to two people meeting outside in public places.
It was illegal for social gatherings to take place indoors, or to involve more than two people. The messages do not indicate whether they made any plans after that, but a government spokesman said on Thursday that there was “no celebration” and that Ms Whately’s comment was intended as “a joke”. Morgan had a heated exchange with Ms Whately in the early days of the pandemic, when he accused her of laughing during an interview about the crisis in care homes.
On April 15, 2020, he highlighted a press report claiming that the number of deaths in care homes at that stage could have already numbered 4,000. When a photograph of the report appeared on the screen for viewers to see, he asked her: “Why are you laughing? What do you find funny about this?”Ms Whately, who appeared exasperated, denied laughing. “I’m trying to answer your questions.
. . I don’t think it’s funny in the slightest,” she said.
