Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones had a ‘Normal People’ reunion at the Oscars

Killing Eve star Jodie Comer and Normal People actor Paul Mescal win the top awards for their West End debut performances at the Olivier Awards on Sunday (April 2) night. The show was hosted by Ted Lasso star and three-time Oliviers nominee Hannah Waddingham, who is also set to co-host this year's Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool.

Paul Mescal celebrated his Olivier Award win with a late night trip to McDonald's. The Irish actor, 27, who recently went viral after being interviewed on the BAFTA red carpet in Irish, reigned supreme after picking up the award for Best Actor for his role as Stanley Kowalski in the revival of A Streetcar Named Desire. He beat the likes of David Tennant and Tom Hollander to the achievement.

It was British theatre’s biggest night.

Paul Mescal said he hoped his win at this year’s Olivier Awards , the biggest night in British theatre, would give his mother “a little bit of a lift” amid her current cancer battle. At the annual theatre awards ceremony on Sunday, Paul, 27, won the Best Actor prize for his leading role as Stanley Kowlaski in the West End revival of A Streetcar Named Desire. During his acceptance speech, the Normal People star thanked his colleagues and co-stars before giving a shout-out to both his parents.

Naman Ramachandran The Royal Shakespeare Company’s theater adaptation of Studio Ghibli’s “My Neighbor Totoro” swept the Olivier Awards on Sunday, taking home six out of the nine categories it was nominated in, including the Sir Peter Hall Award for best director, awarded to Phelim McDermott and the Noël Coward Award for best entertainment or comedy play. The Almeida Theatre also had a successful night, with three of its productions taking home awards. Will Keen won best supporting actor for his performance in “Patriots” and “Tammy Faye” garnered two acting awards – Katie Brayben for best actress in a musical and Zubin Varla for best actor in a supporting role in a musical. Rebecca Frecknall’s revival of Tennessee Williams’ “A Streetcar Named Desire” won best actor for Paul Mescal’s portrayal of Stanley Kowalski and best actress in a supporting role for Anjana Vasan’s performance as Stella. The play also won the best revival award.

“Where the Crawdads Sing” star Daisy Edgar-Jones is teeing up her next box office hit with the lead role in “Twisters.” As previously announced, “Minari” Oscar nominee Lee Isaac Chung will direct from a screenplay by “The Revenant” writer Mark L. Smith.

Following her critically acclaimed work in Normal People and Where The Crawdads Sing, Daisy Edgar-Jones has found her first studio tentpole as she is set to star in Twisters, a new chapter to the 1996 box-office hit for Amblin Entertainment and Universal Pictures. Lee Isaac Chung is on board to direct from a script by Mark L. Smith. The film will be co-financed by Warner Bros.

Angelique Jackson Denzel Washington is in final negotiations to join Ridley Scott’s upcoming “Gladiator” sequel, reteaming after 2007’s “American Gangster.” If the deal closes, the two-time Academy Award winner would join newly minted Oscar nominees Paul Mescal and Barry Keoghan, whose participation in the project broke Thursday. The sequel follows 2000’s blockbuster hit “Gladiator,” which was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won five, including best picture. It earned $460 million at the box office, and now Scott is returning to direct and produce the sequel. The original “Gladiator” starred Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius, a Roman soldier forced into slavery who vows revenge against Commodus, played by Joaquin Phoenix. Since Maximus dies at the end of “Gladiator,” Mescal will play Lucius, the son of Maximus’ lover Lucilla (played by Connie Nielsen), in the sequel. Keoghan is in negotiations to play Emperor Geta.

Angelique Jackson Academy Award-nominee Barry Keoghan is circling his next high-profile role, with the actor in negotiations to join Ridley Scott’s untitled “Gladiator” sequel. If the deal closes, Keoghan would join fellow 2023 Academy Award nominee Paul Mescal, who is set to star in the Paramount Pictures film. Keoghan is in negotiations to play Emperor Geta. Paramount Pictures has dated the film for November 22, 2024. Scott returns to direct the film, which follows 2000’s “Gladiator,” which was nominated for 12 Academy Awards, winning five including best picture. David Scarpa is penning the script. Scott will also produce with Michael Pruss via Scott Free and Doug Wick & Lucy Fisher via Red Wagon Entertainment. Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are executive producing. Also returning from the original film are cinematographer John Mathieson, production designer Arthur Max and costume designer Janty Yates.
