Ariana DeBose wins Oscar for Best Supporting Actress! Makes history as the first Afro-Latina with an Academy Award

Ariana DeBose becomes an Oscar winner! The singer and actor won in the category of Best Supporting Actress for her role as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story. After winning, the Puerto Rican descent actress makes history as the first Afro-Latina with an Academy Award and the second Latina to ever receive the Oscar statuette.Ariana’s triumph comes 60 years after fellow Puerto Rican actress the legendary Rita Moreno also won the award in the same category for the same movie and same role. In 1962 Rita became the first Hispanic woman ever to receive the recognition.“You know what? Now you see why Anita says ‘I want to be in America,’ because even in this weird world that we live in, dream do come true and that’s really a heartening thing right now,” said DeBose while accepting her Academy Award. “If I took the time to say thank you to every single beautiful person who has lifted me up on this stage, we would be sitting here until the next Oscars,” she jokes.“So I’m not going to do that.

However, while the critically acclaimed film — which memorably unleashed the power of the dong with on-screen full-frontal male nudity — did score a slew of awards before the Oscars, it was not nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for best ensemble, which is typically a reliable predictor of a Best Picture win.“Dog” did win best picture in the drama category at the controversy-ridden Golden Globes, which did not air after embarrassing public backlash, alongside “West Side Story,” which was top dog in the musical category. While given seven nods, Steven Spielberg’s updated “West Side Story” hardly shared the same success as the 1961 original, which took home more Oscars than any other musical has.

At This Year’s Oscars, the Best Actress Race Is the One to Watch

Minamata, while fans of Camila Cabello attempted to spam her widely-panned Cinderella adaptation to victory. Then, there was the news last week that —the lead in Steven Spielberg’s best-picture nominee West Side Story—had not been an extended an invite, coinciding with the announcement of a lineup of presenters that was, to put it politely, eclectic, including the likes of Tony Hawk, Kelly Slater, and DJ Khaled. (It was later revealed that the ensuing Internet backlash led the Academy to ask Zegler to present an award, too.)Less reflective of the Academy, but just as much of a rollercoaster, has been the awards season race in general—and few categories are as hotly contested as best actress, which, just days before the Oscars ceremony begins, is still anyone’s game.

2022 Oscar Predictions: Who Will Win Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director and More

94th Annual Academy Awards are Sunday, and that means it's time to name the best of the best of the past year in film. While not quite as chaotic as last year's pandemic-altered releases, this year still offered an interesting mix of theatrical blockbusters, acclaimed streamers and some combination of the two (thanks, HBO Max!). The top films of the year span the cinematic spectrum as well, including a Western, a musical, a star-studded satire, a horror-noir, a Japanese road film and a handful of heartfelt family dramas, leaving voters with some big decisions to make when it comes to the Academy's biggest prizes. So, who will win? Here are ET's predictions for the 2022 Oscars, based on who's been winning with the guilds, the BAFTAs and other precursor awards shows, as well as the ebb and flow of recent film trends.

‘Halo’ Series Introduces Conflicted Master Chief, Sci-Fi Universe That Feels Less Awe-Inspiring Than Familiar: TV Review

Caroline Framke Chief TV CriticIt isn’t the fault of “Halo,” the TV series adaptation finally premiering March 24 on Paramount Plus after years stuck in development hell, that it comes on the heels of a plethora of TV and streaming options that look and feel similar enough to lessen its ability to shock and awe. From “The Mandalorian” (Disney Plus), to “Matrix: Resurrections” (HBO Max), to “Foundation” (Apple TV Plus), there are already plenty of big budget science fiction epics onscreen taking on the same themes as “Halo” (written for TV by Kyle Killen and Steven Kane, and produced in part by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television).
