Netflix has explained how it will stop people in different households from using the same accounts to watch shows and movies.
After announcing plans to crackdown on account sharing last month, the streaming platform has said it will verify users to ensure that one account is used within a single home only. The shake up is set to impact millions of UK subscribers.
In a a new update, Netflix explained the process on its official website, that will involve sending users an email with a verification code. The media giant has clarified that "people who do not live in your household will need to use their own account to watch Netflix", so users that live separately will have to get their own accounts from now on.
The Netflix site read: "When a device outside of your household signs in to an account or is used persistently, we may ask you to verify that device before it can be used to watch Netflix or switch your Netflix household. We do this to confirm that the device using the account is authorized to do so."
Here's what you should know about the latest Netflix update.
Your account can still be used by anyone who lives in your home and they can still make their own profiles and stream from their own devices.
But if family members move out to another address and still use the same account, Netflix may ask for verification if they suspect password sharing.
To detect devices using Netflix within a household, the network uses information such as IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity from devices signed into the account.
Watching Netflix when outside of the house – such as streaming on a mobile device when travelling – will still be allowed, but Netflix will require you to verify that device.
