A significant amount of arrests and warrants took place during a day of action in Rochdale yesterday (March 21). This coincided with hundreds of cars being stopped for checks leading to more arrests as Operation AVRO made its mark on the town.
The Manchester Evening News joined one of these warrants where a 'hell' drugs den flat was raided and three were arrested as police reiterated their commitment to closer neighbourhood policing. It has now been confirmed that a total of 39 arrests were made as raids were conducted for illegal dog breeding and tobacco, modern slavery, 'cuckooing', trafficking, fraud and commercial burglary. Two cannabis farms were also discovered.
A large scale traffic operation on Queensway found 134 offences of which 86 were for speeding, with two seizures and six arrests. Rochdale's turn with Op AVRO came just a day after the announcement that GMP is set to recruit 264 new neighbourhood police officers to proactively fight crime in communities.

Chief Superintendent, Nicky Porter, in conversation with the MEN during this day of action put it as: "Making it a really difficult environment for criminals to thrive."
"There is an aspect of policing that is responding to 999 calls but a lot of the neighbourhood work is tackling anti-social behaviour, it might be speeding, it could be selling drugs, it could be organised crime groups, and it really gives us an opportunity to work in partnership and tackle some of those issues.
