A new development is set to bring more than 250 new homes, 'makers spaces' and green space to Ancoats.
The Phoenix Ironworks project is being managed by Manchester Life, a joint-venture between the council and the Abu Dhabi United Group. The firm has developed a swathe of Ancoats over the last decade, including revitalising the Royal Mills complex.
Now it wants to renovate a former ironworks on Jersey Street. The site, which is also bound by Radium Street, Naval Street, and Poland Street, is currently used for storage and warehousing.

At the core of the project will be 256 new homes, ranging from one, two, and three-bedroom apartments, duplexes, and townhouses. There will also be a private residents’ courtyard.
That sits next to a series of makers’ spaces, plans released today (May 11), show. Those spaces will also sit next to green space that will be open to the public.
“We’re excited to present our proposals for a unique, residential-led development in the Poland Street area of Ancoats, bringing new life to the site on Jersey Street,” a document detailing the plans from Manchester Life said. “Building on Ancoats’ industrial past and its present as a thriving, creative neighbourhood, Phoenix Ironworks will be a place for people to live, make, create and work.
“A new residential community at Phoenix Ironworks will be supported by superb residents' amenities, public and private external areas, as well as commercial and makers' spaces that integrate with historic buildings and enhance the surrounding area.”
The plans are currently out for consultation ahead of an expected planning permission application. The consultation is open from May 11 to May 29.
