Need I go on? Simply put, last year was a banner one for assholes and an objectively wretched one for women. And the forecast for this year is shaping up to be similarly bleak. Take, for instance, CNN anchor Don Lemon's February on-air fiasco During a conversation about 51-year-old Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley and her controversial suggestion that older politicians like President Biden should be required to undergo mental competency testing, Lemon shared an unsolicited, not-at-all-accurate “theory” on how women age. “She says people, you know, politicians or something are not in their prime,” Lemon said. “Nikki Haley isn’t in her prime, sorry.
A woman is considered to be in their prime in her 20s and 30s and maybe 40s.” Prime for what exactly? Childbearing? Political discourse? An extended stay at a luxury villa in the Maldives? The world may never know. When asked to elaborate, Lemon simply told his puzzled female co-hosts to “Google it." “I’m just saying Nikki Haley should be careful about saying that politicians… need to be in their prime when they serve, because she would not be in her prime according to Google or whatever it is,” he added clunkily before allowing the moment to pass. We’re living in a world where the push for parity has been a largely successful project, but misogyny is insidious. It’s worth noting that Lemon isn’t citing anything resembling fact—just archaic biological clock nonsense. But the moment continued to

Addie Morfoot Contributor Monday marks the 20th anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. CPH:DOX will reflect on the repercussions of the war, which ousted Saddam Hussein, but never led to the discovery of weapons of mass destruction, by screening two documentaries: Greta Stocklassa’s “Blix Not Bombs” and Karrar Al-Azzawi’s “Baghdad on Fire.”“(The invasion) was an event that has shaped international politics over the course of the last two decades in unpredictable and often devastating ways,” says CPH:DOX head of program Mads Mikkelsen. “Not least inside Iraq itself. (‘Blix Not Bombs’ and ‘Baghdad on Fire’) provide two different takes – a shot and reverse shot – on the course of events back in 2003 and on the current situation in Iraq as seen from the inside and through the eyes of the young.”“Blix Not Bombs” follows Hans Blix, the former head of the U.N. Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission, who was sent to Iraq in 2002 to determine whether U.S. suspicions that the country was manufacturing weapons of mass destruction were founded. Though the final report found no evidence of an Iraqi weapons program under Hussein, the U.S. and a coalition of allies nevertheless decided to invade the country. Now in the final stretch of his life, Blix questions whether he did enough to prevent a war whose impact is felt to this day.

Callum McLennan “Girl, Unknown,” the sophomore feature from Spanish director Pablo Maqueda (“Dear Werner”), currently ranks as one of the early buzz titles at the Málaga Film Festival, even before its world premiere. The film adapts Paco Bezerra’s stage play “Grooming.” Maqueda, Bezerra and Haizea G. Viana wrote the script, which retains the play’s unsettling cat-and-mouse element. It delves into the recesses of desire, raising questions on depravity, sexuality, and the drive to be fulfilled. The story unfolds a pendulum swinging power dynamic between the seemingly innocent 16 year old Carolina, and a middle aged man she meets in a park named Leo. What begins and is a case of grooming morphs into something far more complex due to Carolina not being all she seems. Maqueda shows a Hanekesque talent in balancing the disturbing with the thrilling. On the film, Maqueda told Variety: “I feel the film as a kaleidoscope and the characters as masks. I like stories that navigate in the daily terror of everyday life,”
