Michael Beale watched his boys in blue rack up their ninth win in 10 games under him – but all he saw was a red flag warning him that Rangers aren’t yet the force that he wants them to be.
The Ibrox manager was pleased with the points in the 2-0 win over St Johnstone but is demanding much more from his players who were up against 10 men for more than an hour after Nicky Clark’s sending off. And he admitted that his recruitment drive, headed by attempts to sign Standard Liege midfielder Nicolas Raskin and Swansea City winger Morgan Whittaker, could go right down the wire as Tuesday night’s transfer deadline approaches.
Beale said: “I was pleased with the amount of chances we created but not so much with our last pass or shot. If they go in, everyone says the performance is fantastic. But I thought - whether they go in or not - there were enough red flags to tell me I’ve got a lot of work to do. I was expecting that. I’d like us to be more ruthless in the final third. I’m expecting a little bit more from my team, if I’m being honest.”
On his hunt for new signings, Beale added: “I’m up to speed, we’re all aligned. People think myself and the board or myself and Ross don’t talk.
"But we’re together every day and on the same page. If we don’t get the work done now, we’ll do more in the summer. If we do less now, then we’ll do more in the summer.
“They’re good players, we don’t want bad players. The clubs they play for don’t want them to go in January. I wouldn’t want to lose one of my better players in January.“
Beale added: “I think there will be a couple of things in the next 48 hours one way or another.”
