Meghan Markle suffers legal blow after being denied right to trademark 'Archetypes'

Meghan Markle has suffered a legal blow after being denied the right to trademark 'Archetypes', the name of her award-winning podcast which launched in August 2022.The Duchess of Sussex, 41, and her team at Archewell Audio had applied to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the trademark. But they were dealt a blow as the request was denied on the grounds of a "likelihood of confusion" due to another trademark with a similar name already being in existence.
It's the most common reason that USPTO to decline a request to trademark. The application to trademark the word was filed by Archewell Audio in March 2022, with the aim of no-one else being able to use it for services connected to podcasts, audio and visual web series, on-demand streaming media and live stage performances.
OK! has contacted Meghan's representatives for comment.The podcast launched on Spotify last summer, with Meghan enlisting the help of her high-profile tennis pal Serena Williams to feature in the first ever episode, where they talked about derogatory words to describe women. On Spotify, the description of the podcast reads: "Archetypes with Meghan - a podcast where we investigate, dissect, and subvert the labels that try to hold women back." A second paragraph, that is no longer shown on the site, read: "Meghan will speak with historians and experts to uncover the origin of these stereotypes and have uncensored conversations with women who know all too well how these typecasts shape our narratives." Meghan's other guests on the podcast include Issa Rae and Ziwe, as well as Mariah Carey and Mindy Kaling.
