Noel Gallagher and Foo Fighters in close race for UK’s Number One album

Foo Fighters and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds are currently in a neck-and-neck race to reach the Number One spot on the UK album charts this week. Both acts released their latest LPs — ‘But Here We Are’ and ‘Council Skies’ — last Friday (June 2) and as it stands, it is too close to call which one will reach the peak position on the Official Album Chart by the end of this week.Currently at the midweek mark, Noel Gallagher has surpassed the American rockers and stands as the UK’s best-selling album with his fourth solo album with High Flying Birds. That being said, the two remain almost neck and neck, as just 200 units separate them from first and second position. The victory would no doubt mark an important milestone for Foo Fighters, as ‘But Here We Are’ marks their first full-length LP since the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins in March last year.

Suzan-Lori Parks’ acclaimed, Pulitzer Prize-winning play Topdog/Underdog debuted Off Broadway in 2001, so it’s a safe bet that a significant portion of the audience at last fall’s limited engagement Broadway revival knew how things would end for the brothers Booth and Lincoln. Those character names alone leave little room for uncertainty.

Queen Catalog Could Sell for Over $1 Billion to Universal Music Group (Report)

CNN reported, with Universal Music Group likely to snatch up anthems like “We Are the Champions,” “We Will Rock You” and “Another One Bites the Dust” from Disney Music Group in a deal that “could surpass $1 billion.”A spokesperson for the Disney Music Group told CNN the company has no plans to sell the catalog. Disney did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday morning.Disney reportedly paid $10 million for the distribution rights to the band’s catalog in 1991.Should “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” and the rest of the Rock-and-Roll Hall of Fame band’s songs pull in the reported $1 billion, it would be the largest sale of a music catalog so far, knocking Bruce Springsteen from the top of the heap.

Leonardo DiCaprio Brings His Mom to Cannes Charity Auction Where His Portrait Sells for $1.3 Million

Ramin Setoodeh Co-Editor-in-Chief There was Gatsby. At 11:30 p.m. at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, the amfAR Cannes gala quietly welcomed one of the biggest movie stars in the world to a tent off the Mediterranean Sea. Leonardo DiCaprio had been missing for several years at the glitzy charity auction that marks the end of partying at the Cannes Film Festival, but this year, he not only stopped by, he brought a date — his mom, Irmelin Indenbirken.  At Table 15, near the stage where celebrities tried to wrangle nepo babies and oligarchs for hundreds of thousands of dollars for lavish pieces of arts, vacations and even a car, DiCaprio tried to go incognito (as if that was possible). He wore a baseball cap to the black-tie dinner and kept his head down. (Though baseball caps are part of DiCaprio’s typical uniform, this festival, he’s been all over Cannes, sans hat, for the premiere of his film, “Killers of the Flower Moon.”)

Smashed Kurt Cobain guitar sells at auction for over ten times its estimate

A guitar smashed by Kurt Cobain has sold at auction for almost $600,000 – around ten times the original estimated price. The black Fender Stratocaster was used by Cobain during touring for Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ album and shows signs of having been broken and repaired a number of times. Eventually it was gifted to Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan in late 1992, with inscriptions from each band member written to him on the body of the guitar. While the electronics in the guitar still work – making it technically playable – part of the neck and half of the headstock is missing, leaving it less than fully functional.Originally it was estimated that the guitar would sell at auction in New York for $60,000 – $80,000.

A Eulogy for MTV News: Former Head Dave Sirulnick on Covering Madonna, Kurt Cobain’s Death and Bringing Politics to Young People

Dave Sirulnick Dave Sirulnick spent nearly three decades at MTV, helping launch the signature “Week in Rock” news franchise and overseeing “Total Request Live” — as well as reality series including “Laguna Beach,” “Cribs” and “My Super Sweet 16.” He spearheaded MTV’s Video Music Awards, as well as its ground-breaking “Choose or Lose” presidential campaign coverage and news programming stemming from world events such as Hurricane Katrina, the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the 2003 war in Iraq. Sirulnick rose to executive vice president for multiplatform production, news and music for MTV before departing in 2015 as part of a major Viacom reorg. With the news that Paramount Global has eliminated the last vestiges of MTV News (which had already been significantly downsized), Variety asked Sirulnick — now president of entertainment at RadicalMedia — to share his thoughts.
