The killer of Nairn banker Alistair Wilson may have hidden in a nearby bandstand watching the police activity before making his getaway.
Bank manager Alistair, 30, had finished getting his two young sons ready for bed when a gunman shot him on the doorstep of his home 18 years ago. An investigation by Police Scotland has revealed that they believe the victim was involved in a minor dispute with the local Havelock pub which was opposite his home.
And now one of the country’s leading cold case experts, forensic psychologist Claire Hooton, who has investigated the case for over three years, believes the killer, who appeared to vanish into thin air after the shooting, was actually close by watching for police to arrive before making their getaway.
Claire also said that during her inquiries she has uncovered information that one of the men involved in the murder was living in a bail hostel in Inverness at the time.
Claire, who has shared her findings with police, said: “After the murder, I believe, the killer hid in the bandstand and waited and watched to see what way the police would arrive at Crescent Road, before making his getaway.
“This may be backed up by sniffer dogs brought in early on who tracked a scent from Alistair’s door to the bandstand... I think this man watched the activity before disappearing.”
She added: “I have been told one of the men involved was living in a bail hostel in Inverness. I also believe Alistair’s killer was interviewed early on in the inquiry and overlooked.”
Last year, it was revealed police had a man in their sights who was a regular drinker in the Havelock pub and was known to have kept guns in his house.
