So it came as a surprise when the Princess of Wales revealed during a recent chat with a 109-year-old nursing home resident that they shared a favourite food - kidneys. The 41 year old royal was on a solo engagement at the Oxford Nursing Home in Slough when she got chatting to Nora, alongside her grandchildren Lynne and John.
Princess Kate was captured on film chatting to Nora, who celebrated her 109th birthday on 7 January, two days before Kate's birthday. On learning of Nora's birthday, the royal exclaimed: “A fellow Capricorn!” Kate then asked Nora what she liked to eat. After some prompting, the nursing home resident replied by saying kidneys and brussels sprouts.
Although kidneys are probably not a common food in many diets, Kate surprisingly said: “I love kidneys too!” A popular meal containing the ingredient is devilled kidneys, a Victorian British breakfast dish consisting of lamb's kidneys cooked in a spiced sauce, referred to as "devilling". It has since become more frequently used as a supper-time dish. Despite their appearance, kidneys have many nutritional benefits - including being regarded as an excellent source of protein, iron, vitamin B12 and omega fatty acids.
The Princess of Wales also tried her hand at making pancakes during the visit to the care home - though she was forced to apologise after it went horribly wrong. Kate took part in the pancake making challenge alongside two of the care home's cooks. However, it didn't go as well as planned as she struggled to free the batter mix from a frying pan.
