Proud mama? Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ son Charlie Hall is following in her acting footsteps on Sex Lives of College Girls — and she’s watched his “very racy” appearances.
“Yes, it’s a very racy show,” the 62-year-old Seinfeld alum said on the Tuesday, January 24, episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! about her 25-year-old son’s latest acting gig. “I did watch the show and I think he was, you know, really great. He was adorable. He was f—king some girl in the library and I thought it was dynamite.”
Hall — whom Louis-Dreyfus shares with husband Brad Hall, alongside son Henry, 30 — made his SLOCG debut in season 2 as Andrew. Charlie’s character plays the academic rival of Whitney Chase (Alyah Chanelle Scott). While the twosome butted heads in their biology class, they soon developed a steamy connection outside of class.
“It makes you feel good about teaching him how to read, right?” host Jimmy Kimmel quipped on Tuesday, to which Louis-Dreyfus said, “Totally” with a laugh.
The HBO Max series — helmed by Mindy Kaling — stars Pauline Chalamet, Renee Rapp, Amrit Kaur and Scott, 25, as college roommates navigating new relationships and academics. Season 2 of SCLOG, which premiered in November 2022, introduced viewers to Charlie’s Andrew.
“I auditioned for a different part and they liked me, but didn’t think I was right for that one. So, they were like, ‘Hey, what about this part of Andrew?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, I’ll do anything. This show’s awesome and you’re awesome. Just tell me where to go and where to stand and I’ll try not to f—k it up,’” the former basketball player told W magazine in a December 2022 profile. “It was actually a total pivot into this kind of dick, douchey role, which was super fun.”

It is always a time for celebration whenever we get a new Nicole Holofcener film, and that is especially true of her latest one that stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus. You Hurt My Feelings which had its premiere Sunday night at Sundance, the pair’s second collaboration, with 2013’s Enough Said co-starring the late James Gandolfini being the first. In that film, and other Holofcener writing/directing efforts like Friends With Money, Lovely & Amazing, and perhaps my favorite, Please Give (not to forget the wonderful Can You Ever Forgive Me? which she co-wrote), they always focus on the quirky nature of our relationships with others in our lives. Holofcener just has always had a knack for getting right to the heart of things, often with a witty and wise, and truthful touch.

How do you make the norm abnormal for the sake of comedy? Interracial/mixed-race families are so ordinary these days (I’m part of one as we speak), but comedy often has to exaggerate our differences to strike at deep laughs that speak to deeper, uncomfortable truths. That’s fair enough, and writer/director Kenya Barris’ (“Black-ish”) well-intentioned family comedy, “You People,” certainly seems to have the plan to use racial misunderstanding, misfires, and mis-intentions, to create a funny, insightful dialogue about families, love, and race in America today.
There was a time when it seemed like every movie trailer for every single comedy began with bouncy music and a voice-over artist explaining cheerfully, “[NAME OF PROTAGONIST] had it all!” But at the beginning of Nicole Holofcener’s “You Hurt My Feelings,” Beth (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) does, in fact, seem to have it all: she’s in a long-lasting marriage with a successful therapist, they have a great apartment on the Upper West Side, their 23-year-old son Eliot (Owen Teague) is writing his first play, she teaches writing at the New School, and she’s just finished her second book.
Jim Edmonds may have split from Meghan King three years ago, but he’s still re-litigating their breakup and its aftermath!
In a nutshell the brilliantly hilarious, pertinent, and wickedly smart new movie, You People is in some ways a new age Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner, that landmark 1967 Tracy-Hepburn-Poitier Oscar winning comedy about the effect an interracial relationship has on the parents of the young couple. Of course back then it was a major social issue and even had trouble booking some southern theatres. The idea was switched in a Bernie Mac/Ashton Kutcher 2005 remake that all those years later did not have the same impact. With anti-semitism and racism back on the rise in 2023 America however the concept of an interracial/interfaith marriage, Black and White, Jew and Muslim, could not be more timely or needed, and in co-star Jonah Hill’s and director Kenya Barris’ whipsmart screenplay is also a knock-you-out-of- your-seat laugh riot. Ironically I saw it this week at its World Premiere at the same Westwood Village theatre where I saw Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner all those years ago. With a packed house the laughter was so continuous and loud for You People it was hard to hear a lot of the lines. When was the last time that happened?
