‘I wish I Kissed A Boy was on TV when I was a teen, being gay was seen as shameful'

I Kissed a Boy, which is set in Italy and hosted by Dannii Minogue, has a similar premise to Love Island, but the twist is that the men who are coupled up have to kiss before they’ve even said hello to each other. Unsurprisingly, viewers have been hooked since the first episode aired and adorable contestants such as Jake from Swansea and Ollie from Brighton already have a firm place in our hearts.
But apart from the fact that it’s hugely entertaining, the show is being hailed as a game-changer due to the fact that it’s the UK’s first all-male gay dating show. Someone who couldn’t be happier about this is community manager Jack Murphy from Caerphill.
He tells us that having a programme like this on our screens - where a diverse and relatable group of gay men are front and centre - is a “huge” deal. Jack, 33, says, “When I came out to my parents, their knowledge of homosexuality was basically Boy George, George Michael, Freddie Mercury and Elton John.That was it.They didn’t know anything else about it, so the fact a TV show like this is in people’s homes is huge.
It’s a dating show about love, not about sex, or drugs or tragedy.The representation of gay friendships as well as romances is also really positive because there was always this stigma that being gay was a lonely life and it’s not like that at all for a lot of us. We’re a community.
