Rick Astley says Yung Gravy track infringed his publicity rights

Rick Astley has sued Yung Gravy over the track ‘Betty (Get Money)’, which borrows heavily from the former’s hit and Rickrolling meme classic ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’. Though it’s not a copyright case, with Astley claiming that his publicity rights were infringed when Young Gravy’s team employed a soundalike to recreate the ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ vocals within ‘Betty (Get Money)’.Part of the recent trend of new pop songs overtly and heavily interpolating old pop songs, Yung Gravy’s people got all the required permissions from the writers and publishers of ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ to incorporate the 1987 song into the 2022 release.Indeed, as a result of licensing the interpolation, the writers of ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ – the British 80s pop-making team that were Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman – get all the songwriting credits for ‘Betty (Get Money)’ on the database of US collecting society MLC.However, according to Billboard, Astley’s lawsuit explains that Yung Gravy wasn’t able to get permission to actually sample the original recording of ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’.

Rick Astley files multimillion-dollar suit against Yung Gravy over Never Gonna Give You Up row

Rick Astley has filed a multimillion-dollar suit against Yung Gravy, saying that the rap artist was unauthorized in using an imitation of his vocals from 1987's Never Gonna Give You Up for the 2022 single Betty (Get Money). The English singer and songwriter, 56, filed legal docs in Los Angeles that were reviewed by TMZ, saying Yung Gravy and his team had only licensed the instrumentals of the pop classic.Astley's legal team told the court that the Rochester, Minnesota-born musical artist, 26, and his production team, including Dillon Francis, and impersonator Nick 'Popnick' Seeley were not authorized in reproducing the vocals of his hit, which triggered the online 'Rick-Rolling' phenomenon.  The latest: Rick Astley, 56, has filed a multimillion dollar suit against Yung Gravy, 26, saying that the rap artist was unauthorized imitation of his vocals from 1987's Never Gonna Give You Up for his single Betty (Get Money)The group 'conspired to include a deliberate and nearly indistinguishable imitation of Mr. Astley's voice throughout the song,' Astley's legal team told the court.Astley said that Yung Gravy cost him potentially lucrative future collaboration opportunities in using Never Gonna Give You Up as the basis of his 2022 track.
