The parents of a Gorton-born man shot dead by police in Australia allege officers waited for around seven minutes before they gave him CPR at the scene. They also allege Luke Gilbert didn't lunge at them with a penknife he was carrying on a belt clip - or threaten them in any way at all.
Darren and Nicola Gilbert have now launched a petition which has attracted more than 15,000 signatures and called for a 'transparent and independent investigation into Luke's death, including a review of the officers' use of force and whether they followed proper procedures'. In a statement at the time, police in Queensland said Luke 'allegedly threatened officers advancing on them and was subsequently shot'. Officers, added the force, 'immediately rendered first aid', but Luke was declared dead a short time later.
But Darren and Nicola claim they have viewed CCTV and video footage given to the family by the public which has been independently analysed.
In a statement to the M.E.N., they said: "We can now confirm the small penknife that he had on his belt which he used for work and camping - it is not uncommon to carry one as a tool in
