George R.R. Martin: ‘House of the Dragon’ Needs 40 Episodes to Tell Full Story, Paddy Considine ‘Deserves an Emmy’

Zack Sharf George R.R. Martin wrote in an Oct. 11 blog post that “House of the Dragon” will need to run a total of 40 episodes if it wants to fully tell the story of the Targaryen civil war, commonly referred to as the Dance of Dragons. The first season of the HBO prequel series runs 10 episodes, so Martin is envisioning a four-season run for the show. HBO has already greenlit a second season of “House of the Dragon.” “When I was a boy, shows had 39 episodes a season,” Martin wrote. “By the time I was writing for ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ it was down to 22.  Cable shrunk that even further. ‘The Sopranos’ had 13 episodes per season, but just a few years later, ‘Game of Thrones’ had only 10 (and not even that, those last two seasons). If ‘House of the Dragon’ had 13 episodes per season, maybe we could have shown all the things we had to ‘time jump’ over…though that would have risked having some viewers complain that the show was too ‘slow,’ that ‘nothing happened.'”

‘Bobby’s Triple Threat’ Gets Season 2 Nod at Food Network

Brian Steinberg Senior TV Editor Food Network likes Bobby Flay’s new recipe. The celebrity chef’s new “Bobby’s Triple Threat,” which just debuted on September 27, has been picked up by Food Network for a second season slated to air in 2023. With just two weeks under its belt, the series is beating ratings benchmarks set in the prior six-week and year-earlier periods, and stands as the Discovery Warner Bros.-backed outlet’s highest-rated new launch. In each one-hour episode, one chef is challenged to vie with a trio of Flay’s handpicked proxies — Tiffany Derry, Michael Voltaggio andBrooke Williamson— for a chance to take home $25,000. In the first two rounds, Flay picks the main ingredients that the chefs must emphasize, while the single chef selects which of Flay’s trio to compete against. The last round features the competitor picking the ingredients to incorporate, while going against the last remaining expert in Flay’s group. All the while, one discerning guest judge blind taste tests the dishes at the end of every round. If the competitor can out-cook Flay’s group and earn more points with their cumulative score, they earn a cash prize

Mark Pedowitz Saved The CW. As He Exits the Network, Greg Berlanti and Jared Padalecki Reflect on the Exec’s Legacy

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large [Above: The CW CEO Mark Pedowitz, with his network’s stars, at the 2015 upfronts.] When Mark Pedowitz first joined The CW as head of the network in 2011, he told “Supernatural” star Jared Padalecki that he was a fan of the series (which was then in its sixth season) and had seen every episode. At first, Padalecki assumed that Pedowitz’s comments were the kind of niceties that an incoming network president is supposed to say to their series stars. “I didn’t think he was lying,” Padalecki said. “But I thought he was at least being kind. Maybe he hadn’t caught up yet or had seen two episodes. He was certainly supportive and friendly. But I came to find out, as the months and years progressed, that he actually was a big fan of Supernatural and had seen every single episode… When we talked this weekend, he said that he has seen every single episode of every show that he was president of, and will continue to watch every episode of every show.  And I believe him. He hasn’t lied to me ever.”

‘Beverly Hills Cop’ Original Cast Members Returning for Netflix Sequel ‘Axel Foley’

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Eddie Murphy is reuniting with his original “Beverly Hills Cop” co-stars — Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser and Bronson Pinchot — for the upcoming sequel, “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley.” Netflix picked up the rights in 2019 to release the next “Beverly Hills Cop” movie, which is currently in development. “Axel Foley” is the fourth installment in the hit action-comedy franchise, following 1984’s “Beverly Hills Cop,” 1987’s “Beverly Hills Cop II” and 1994’s “Beverly Hills Cop III.” For the fourquel, producers opted to ditch the roman numerals and instead name the film after Murphy’s fish-out-of-water character, a Detroit police officer who travels to Los Angeles to investigate crimes.
