Anthony Elanga isn't the first player to be quizzed on a lack of minutes under Erik ten Hag and he certainly won't be the last.
The 20-year-old was a regular favourite of previous manager Ralf Rangnick last season, but Ten Hag's arrival and the subsequent signing of Antony has seen minutes diminish and stature within the first-team picture follow suit. At this moment, the Swedish international is arguably the fourth choice down the right, with Jadon Sancho and Facundo Pellistri preferred in recent weeks.
Elanga recently spoke of his frustration while away with Sweden on international duty, detailing conversations with Ten Hag in which the Reds boss has identified what needs to be done between now and the end of the season. "When the opportunity comes, I just have to be ready to take it," he added.

Ten Hag has made a habit of sticking, rather than twisting this season with a core of Reds trusted upon by the Dutchman through a congested schedule. But with the potential of 19 games on the horizon between now and June, depth of squad will be as crucial as ever and both Pellistri and Alejandro Garnacho are proof that impact off the bench can yield future starts.
In that sense, hope is by no means lost for Elanga, and Ten Hag has already told the winger what he wants to see more of.
"He's doing well and he's a young guy," Ten Hag said of the Swede after he started in the 1-0 win over West Ham in October. "Last year, he came in for a lot of games and this year, obviously, I would say it's normal to drop down in minutes, but you can see today he's quite mature.
