Demi Sims: ‘I see myself marrying a woman – my family can’t imagine me with a boyfriend’

During her years on ITV's The Only Way Is Essex, popular former cast member Demi Sims won viewers hearts as she talked openly about her sexuality. In fact, she was met by a huge outpouring of love and support for the candid way she confronted her feelings of confusion regarding her identity. Since then, the TV personality, who quit the show last year along with sisters Chloe and Frankie to film a reality series in America, has been on a long journey of self acceptance.
And now, speaking exclusively to OK!, the 26 year old says that she's unwilling to give her sexuality a definitive label for the time being, for fear of being stereotyped. “I don’t know if I’ll ever have another boyfriend and I’m coming to terms with that now, but I’m still not ready to say I’m fully gay yet,” she tells us. “I don’t know why, I’m just not 100% ready to come out.
But I do feel like that day will come and I do see myself marrying a woman. It’s more of a mental game with me and about just accepting it.” She adds: “It’s not that I think anything bad of it. I love being into girls and I love the LGBTQ+ community, but I’ve just got to make sure I’m 100% ready before I say something because as soon as you label yourself, people like to keep you in that box.
My friends and family say to me, ‘Demi, you’re gay – just say it.’ But I’m just not there yet.” After coming out to one of her best friends when she was 16 years old, Demi kept her sexuality a secret until she was 19 when she had her first girlfriend, but she says that her family were “supportive” when she shared the news with them.
