Dark Comedy ‘Beef’ Releases Trailer For Upcoming Steven Yeun/Ali Wong Series

Alison Herman We abhor most in others what we already hate in ourselves. So it is that Amy Lau (Ali Wong) and Danny Cho (Steven Yeun) become mortal enemies despite being kindred spirits. The protagonists of the Netflix half-hour “Beef” first meet when both are behind the wheel, navigating the parking lot of a Lowe’s-like home improvement store. Each driver is there for different reasons: Danny is a handyman who works at the Reseda motel his family used to own; Amy owns a houseplant boutique the hardware chain is in talks to acquire. But both react in the exact same way to a minor spat over exiting a spot. Their explosive road rage propels the pair on a chase across the suburban San Fernando Valley, then through 10 episodes of increasingly out-of-hand emotional warfare.

According to the official synopsis, the series follows what happens when “a road rage incident between two strangers — a failing contractor and an unfulfilled entrepreneur — sparks a feud that brings out their darkest impulses.” What comes after that, the cast teases, is a slew of action scenes including car races and a stairwell chase that takes Mazino, Yeun and David Chao up several flights. Mazino shared that he thought his co-star Chao vomited while shooting, though he was too far up the stairs to see. “That was one of those moments where you just black out and hope that it’s over, and then it’s over,” Mazino told Variety. “So, it was fun shooting that.”

Ali Wong is opening up about the «big left turn» she had to take for her new Netflix series, . During a Q&A following the world premiere of “Beef” at South by Southwest, the actors were asked how they managed to decompress after performing such explosive anger on set. “Our bodies shut down,” Yeun said. “Steven and I both broke out in hives after the show. Mine was on my face. His was all over his body because he’s weak like that,” Wong said, to wide audience laughter. “It definitely took a toll on us, but we didn’t even realize until after the show ended. I mean, I won’t even talk about what happened to your elbow.”

The sequence opens with a close-up shot of Danny struggling to buckle his seatbelt outside of Forsters, a fictional DIY hardware store. His already apparent exasperation escalates to a new level when he begins to back his red pickup truck out of his parking space and is stopped abruptly by an incoming white Mercedes-Benz, who honks at him at length.
