A dad who went to his doctor with a lingering tickly tough has been given just months to live after being diagnosed with a rare cancer.
Martin Hughes, 37, first noticed the cough in November 2022 after returning from a holiday to Greece. Just before Christmas he visited the doctor after failing to shift it, and was later told he had throat cancer.
His doctor told him 'not to worry' as most forms of the condition are easily treated - but after further tests, Martin was diagnosed with a rare cancer of the throat - small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma - after it spread from his bowel, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Martin's friends and family are now appealing to the public to help fundraise for his treatment, which will not be covered by the NHS according to childhood friend Richard.
"Because the cancer spread from his bowel and straight to his throat, missing out his lungs he doesn't fit the criteria to have it [immunotherapy] on the NHS. He doesn't tick a box," he said.
"They have told him it's going to be months he has left to live. He's not in palliative care or anything, he is at home and fine in himself.
"Martin is fighting for his life with all the stubbornness and enthusiasm he has. He's a stubborn b*****d and this won't beat him. I do think he's putting on a brave face for everybody at the moment."
Richard said Martin is in need of a variety of treatments, including oxygen tanks, at a cost of around £6,500 every three weeks to him and his family.
"This barely being met by Martin and his family," he said. "This cost will not stop, it will only increase as the weeks go on."

Manori Ravindran Executive Editor of International Lisa Joy, showrunner of “Westworld” and “The Peripheral,” says the Writers’ Guild of America is “acting for [writers’] collective good” in its negotiations with studios, even if it could potentially lead to a strike in May. Joy, who runs production company Kilter Films, is being honored at French TV drama festival Series Mania this week. She took part in a keynote conversation on Wednesday, at which she quipped that a strike will mean “more time with my kids.” “It’s a little stressful because I’ve reached a point where I can manage without work for a while,” said Joy. “As it is, we have shows coming out and we’re in the editing process. We have a rotation of shows that aren’t dependent on writing at the phase they’re in. But I always stand by the decision of the Writers’ Guild — I know they’re acting for our collective good.”

Guy Lodge Film Critic Early on in “What’s Love Got to Do With It?,” enterprising London-based filmmaker Zoe (Lily James) pitches a proposed documentary about Muslim arranged marriages to a pair of white male commissioners. They’re bored and disengaged until they realize how the topic can be dressed up in the tropes and lingo of Western romantic comedy to appeal to a general British audience: One suggests interview inserts in the style of “When Harry Met Sally,” the other name-drops “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” as a reference point. When Zoe suggests titling the doc “Love Contractually,” the deal is done. Sharper than anything else in Shekhar Kapur’s pleasant, easygoing comedy, the scene neatly satirizes how nuanced cross-cultural material can be blandly packaged and whitewashed for the mainstream — a point that would land harder if “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” didn’t proceed to do much the same thing. At a push, you could credit the film — a first feature screenwriting credit for producer and former journalist Jemima Khan — with some meta self-awareness as it tackles a thorny, divisive cultural institution in the sweetest, sunniest terms possible, down to its own recurring “When Harry Met Sally”-style inserts. But to what end, exactly? As strenuously as the film professes to give arranged marriages a fair shake, its whole cornball narrative is rigged against the very concept: “Love Contractually” may be the pitch, but “Love Actually” is the preferred outcome.
