Coronation Street staple Daniel Osborne has faced more than his fair share of love, loss and heartbreak on the cobbles in recent years. The popular soap character devastated fans as they watched him lose the love of his life Sinead Tinker to cervical cancer in 2019, leaving behind one child, a son named Bertie.
Since then the teacher has dabbled in only a handful of romances, including with former sex worker Nicky Wheatley, before finally finding true love once more with Daisy Midgeley, with the couple even preparing to wed. Yet away from the soap, the actor behind Weatherfield’s favourite teacher, Rob Mallard, has opened up about his own life - which thankfully isn’t quite as eventful as Daniel’s.
But what exactly is his life like off screen? Early Career Born and raised in Manchester, Rob Mallard first cut his acting teeth in a short video called Bottom of the Ninth, all the way back in 2003. From there he went to star in a number of guest roles, including in Ememrdale and Fresh Meat, before he finally bagged the role of Daniel Osborne, Ken Barlow’s long lost son, in Coronation Street in 2016.
One year after bagging the coveted soap role, Rob publicly came out as gay during an interview with Gay Times back in 2017 (although later admitted he had been out to his family for a good deal longer) and "never planned to keep [his sexuality] quiet.” Co-star Romance That very same year, just like his character, Rob managed to find love on the Cobbles, however in his case it was with co-star Daniel Brocklebank who plays the mild mannered vicar Billy Mayhew. The couple dated briefly and even saw Rob mention Daniel while collecting a British Soap Award.
