Coronation Street star Daniel Brocklebank is currently involved in a massive storyline which has seen his character Billy Mayhew discover that partner Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) has been diagnosed with motor neurone disease. Speaking to Metro. co.
uk at the British Soap Awards, Daniel candidly discussed his own family connection to the disease, and why it was so important for Corrie to cover the topic. ‘It’s a very personal subject to me. My grandfather died of motor neurone disease so there is always an importance to handle a storyline with truth and integrity, but for me on this one, it feels even bigger.
Daniel revealed that he spoke to his family before tackling the storyline in order to get their permission to tell their personal storyline. He is also keen to raise awareness of the topic. ‘Because MND is such a cruel disease, anything that we can do to help people who are either living with MND or people who are related to people with MND, and hopefully maybe raise some money and make some steps towards finding a cure,’ he explained.
While this is a very heavy, heart breaking storyline, Daniel revealed that viewers can definitely expect some moments of lightness in the future for Billy and Paul. ‘It’s not all going to be doom and gloom! With any storyline like this I think it’s important to find that balance. With Paul’s illness, we’re not solely focusing on the fact that he’s dying, we’re focusing on the fact that he’s living.
He’s living with MND. ’Paul had kept his diagnosis to himself for a long time, and planned to keep it that way until after sister Gemma’s wedding. However, his plan was thwarted when Billy arrived in in court for Paul’s hearing and heard the judge reveal the diagnosis.
