Christian Ramirez has flown back to America as he waits for Columbus Crew to strike a deal with Aberdeen. The Major League Soccer side are in talks over a deal which should see the Dons recoup a small fee.
The 31-year-old flew out of Aberdeen on Monday morning and he is expected to sign a three-year-deal with Columbus. Ramirez had been keen to remain in Europe but after getting limited game time since the summer he has decided to return to the States. He said his farewells to his Aberdeen teammates after their Viaplay Cup semi-final defeat to Rangers.
The former US international striker came on in extra time but couldn’t get the 10 man Dons over the line against Rangers. The frontman was a popular figure with the Red Army and was seen throwing his boots into the stand after the Hampden clash. Ramirez was a marquee signing under former boss Stephen Glass and was a regular goal getter for the Dons.
His time in Scotland turned sour when Glass was sacked. He was unhappy with that decision and it led to an uneasy relationship with his successor Jim Goodwin.
Ramirez was given time off before the end of the season to return to America early. There was speculation over the summer about his future.
Ramirez returned and scored in the early League Cup group stages but was marginalised after Bojan Miovski and Duk came in. His only start in the league this season came in the recent goal-less draw with Ross County.
