Some of that authority comes from longevity; some from Lakshmi’s fellow judges, chef Tom Colicchio and editor Gail Simmons; some from casting, which has generated a talent pool so formidable that the show frequently circles back to its own alumni, including for this season’s London-set World All Stars. But a great deal of it comes from Lakshmi, a presence so commanding she can deliver phrases like “the Glad family of products” and “furnished by San Pellegrino” without disrupting the show’s carefully constructed sense of gravitas.

During the Season 11 “Chicago Fire” finale, Mouch (played by Christian Stolte, who has been on the series since 2012 debut) was hit by shrapnel during a call with a live shooter. After being rushed to the hospital, the firehouse was alerted that it wasn’t a bullet and that he was alert and recovering. However, in the final moments of the episode, Herrmann (David Eigenberg) was by Mouch’s side when he realized that he was looking pale. He looked down and saw that Mouch had been bleeding — and then flat-lined. As the camera panned out, it became clear why the title of the episode was “Red Waterfall,” as blood ran off the side of Mouch’s hospital bed and Herrmann screamed for a doctor.

As Will left the hospital following the many changes at Gaffney, he reunited with his ex-fiancée, Natalie (Torrey DeVitto, who made a surprise appearance in the episode after leaving at the end of Season 6). “It was a difficult decision, but ultimately, I felt I’d taken Dr. Halstead as far as I can go with him. I think that comes down to a creative part of you, or the energy or spirit you have that you’re either built for a very long time with one person or not,” Gehlfuss tells Variety. “I am attracted to the profession for the variety in it, and eight years is a long time. It’s two college degrees! I’m joking now that I basically have a doctorate in television.”
