Casting directors who came to celebrate their own at the 38th Annual Artios Awards Thursday had a message for actors who worry that making a self-tape means sending one’s work into the abyss: they do take the time to see your at-home audition.
Casting Society President Destiny Lilly told Deadline that she recognizes that some actors probably think those self-tapes that were made during the pandemic ended up in some massive, unopened pile of manila folders. And that couldn’t be anything further from the truth, she said.
“Actors are the lifeblood of what we do. We couldn’t do what we do without actors,” Lilly said before tonight’s awards ceremony at the Beverly Hilton. “Of course I listen to the actors when they want to say something and of course what they are saying is valid. I miss the connection of being in the room with people. I miss that feeling of being with everyone else and having an actor come in, and you think ‘that’s the person!’ During the pandemic, it wasn’t possible for us to do that. Now as industry we are slowly crawling out of that, all of us are reassessing how we can approach casting, how to make it safe and as equitable as possible, and to make sure the actors are able to do their best work.”
We watch your tapes,” Lilly continued. “The most important thing to know is actors solve the problems for casting. We are trying to find people. We are looking for you. We are going through the tapes. One of the things about having tapes come in is that it allows us to watch more than we would if we just had 10 people in the room. Our goal is to see how we can make this process work for everyone.”

January Jones is tired of auditioning at home.
Ethan Shanfeld January Jones took aim at virtual auditions on Saturday, writing on her Instagram story, “Note to Hollywood: It’s time for casting directors to come back into the office like everyone else. To audition actors in person.” The “Mad Men” star continued, “And if anyone asks for a FEE to audition please know that this is criminal and PATHETIC. I personally have had to self tape several times since the pandemic began and there is zero benefit to it for anyone involved. It’s time consuming, expensive, and a drag to whomever you have to drag in to read with you (sorry Mom), and is often done with zero direction/notes.” Since the pandemic, self-tapes have remained a common way for actors to audition for roles, rather than auditioning live in front of casting directors.

David Heuring When the American Society of Cinematographers hosts its 37th annual awards bash on March 5 at the Beverly Hilton hotel, the lucky people in the room will rub shoulders with an astonishing assemblage of motion imaging artists. Hanging over the proceedings will be the ghost of the generation that invented visual storytelling. Although they’re gone, they’ve left a legacy to their descendants: continue to extend the craft and push the liveliest art into the future while adapting tools and techniques that evolve from year to year. Directors of photography will heed that advice. For them, reaching an audience emotionally has always been the result of intuitive manipulation of tone aided by the skillful application of optical and photographic tools – all in concert with other film arts such as direction, acting and editing. Trends have evolved year to year, culminating lately in large-format cinematography, with its fresh image architecture and distinctive depth of field.
Pent-up frustration by actors over the way audition process has evolved — or devolved — during the pandemic erupted this week when actors Ever Carradine, Merrin Dungey and Sprague Grayden slammed an ad by Betty Mae Casting offering paid self-taping services for non-Betty Mae projects.
