California Covid Cases Surge To 5-Month High As Delta Variant Spreads Among The Unvaccinated

On Monday, California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office announced that one of his staffers, who was fully vaccinated, had contracted Covid-19. According to multiple reports, the staffer had not been near the governor or any of the aides who have worked closely with Newsom’s of late.

California reported 14,099 new cases on Friday, the highest one-day total the state has seen since February 1, 2021. That is up from 10,450 new cases reported the day before, and comes amid a general trend of rising cases and quickly rising infection rates.

On July 4, the overall 7-day average of Covid cases per 100,000 was 4.6. Today, that number has risen to 23.2 per 100,000. The 7-day average of cases is considered a good measure of the rate of infection spread. And while the rise from an average of 4.6 per 100,000 to 23.2 per 100,000 is a 400% jump, the data was much, much higher for the unvaccinated.

California is “currently experiencing the fastest increase in Covid-19 cases during the entire pandemic” according to an announcement from State Public Health Officer Tomás Aragón on Wednesday. He reported the state is currently experiencing 22.7 new cases per 100,000 people per day, with case rates increasing tenfold since early June. (The state data dashboard says 23.1 per 100,000, but either way infections are skyrocketing.)

After a week of rollercoaster numbers that have generally trended up, the State of California on Friday recorded its highest number of new daily Covid cases since the dark days of January. The number of new cases in the past 24 hours, 14,402, was up more than 50% from the 9,517 cases tallied just the day before. Looking back a little further, the number of new daily cases has nearly doubled in the past nine days, from 7,457 on July 28 to 14,402 on Friday.

As the drumbeat for vaccination requirements grows louder in California, cases are increasing statewide, largely among unvaccinated populations.

New cases of Covid-19 in California rose about 10% over the weekend, a timeframe that often sees undercounts due to diminished testing on Saturdays and Sundays. The 10,356 new cases reported on Friday rose to a three-day daily average of 11,135 on Monday. (The state has stopped reporting daily cases on weekends and now reports a three-day lump sum on Mondays.)

As the Delta variant drove infections across California to their biggest one-day jump of 2021 this week, Hollywood was not immune.

California tallied 10,356 newly-reported confirmed cases on Friday. That number had skyrocketed up from just 7,457 reported on Thursday, a 39% jump in one day. It’s the biggest 24-hour jump in cases the region has seen this year, according to the state Covid data dashboard.

Covid cases continued to rise in Los Angeles County on Thursday, albeit more slowly. The raw number of daily cases rose 17% in the past week, to 3,248. That’s roughly half of the 7,458 cases recorded in California on Thursday, even though Los Angeles County’s population accounts for only roughly 25% of the state’s residents.

Asked earlier this week if there is a Covid-19 data point that would push the state to reimplement restrictions, Newsom said, “We’re not looking at physical distancing or closing anything down.” He then emphasized, “The answer to the Delta variant is vaccination,” said Newsom. “We don’t need masking. Just get vaccinated.”

As he urged Californians to get vaccinated, Governor Gavin Newsom said twice this week that the share of analyzed positive Covid cases caused by the more transmissive Delta variant would be north of 60% when new numbers were announced. That’s up from about 53% in late July. The governor was underselling his point.

For the second day in a row, California Gov. Newsom was asked on Tuesday if the state’s mask mandate is returning. At first, Newsom sidestepped, as he had Monday with, “We’ll see. At the end of the day, the epidemiology on the variants will make that determination.” Newsom also said that July numbers show the Delta variant present in over 60% of the state’s Covid tests genomically sequenced. Nationally, it’s 83%.
