At Tuesday night’s world premiere of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, there was a huge sigh of relief from the mass of animators inside Westwood’s Regency Village Theater: The $100M-budgeted sequel to the Oscar-winning 2018 animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, was done, having completed post-production literally just 10 days ago after a five-year trek to the screen which included a Covid delay due to the backlog in post-production houses. Starting today abroad, and into Thursday in U.S./Canada, the continuing adventures of Miles Morales will see the light of day in what is expected to be a $150M global opening.

On Thursday, “Fast X” raked in $7.5 million in previews, putting it on track to earn more than $60 million in its first weekend of release. That puts the tenth chapter in the “Fast” saga at No. 7 in terms of highest box office debuts, between 2021’s “F9: The Fast Saga” ($70 million) and 2019’s “Hobbs and Shaw” ($60 million). Globally, “Fast X” is looking to bring in $220 million overseas in its opening weekend. The movie cost Universal $340 million to produce and another $100 million to promote, so “Fast X” will need Fast Family members from around the world to speed to theaters in order to turn a profit.

In second place, in its sixth weekend, Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” collected £858,444 for a total of £51 million. There were two debuts in the top five. Sony’s “Love Again” bowed in third place with £340,785 and Universal’s “Book Club: The Next Chapter” in fourth with £299,370. Rounding off the top five was Studiocanal’s “Evil Dead Rise,” which earned £258,417 in its fourth weekend for a total of £5 million.

Refresh for updates...The box office and the industry is in need of counterprogramming working after several non-tentpoles were squashed by Super Mario Bros Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and hopefully that will be Focus Features’ Book Club: The Next Chapter. With $500K in Thursday previews, the movie is looking at a $7M-$10M start at 3,507 theaters. Hopefully it clears double digits, something that will be evident on Mother’s Day when the Universal specialty label is expecting a pop in business.

That was a real treat.”  Although the sequel was filmed nearly five years after the original, Fonda never lost contact with her “Book Club” co-stars.
