Amazon Studios’ Big Latino Western ‘The Head of Joaquin Murrieta,’ Broken Down By Its Creators

Emiliano Granada “The Head of Joaquín Murrieta” bowed Feb. 17, guns blazing worldwide on Prime Video, weighing in as one of the biggest bets ever from Amazon Studios in Latin America and Amazon Prime and Colombian production powerhouse Dynamo. Its success can open the door for other big swings in Latin America.  Created by Colombia’s Mauricio Leiva Cock (“Capital Roar,” “Green Frontier”) at Fidelio, one of the fastest rising writing-directing talents in Colombia, and Diego Ramírez Schrempp (“Narcos,” “Falco”) at Dynamo, which handled physical production of “Narcos” in Colombia, the ambitious Latin Western, fully locally developed, describes how Joaquin Murrieta, played by a mischievous Juan Manuel Bernal, became a legend.

‘Alex Rider’ Producer Eleventh Hour Sets ‘The Man In The Back Seat,’ ‘Payday,’ Expands Creative Team

Naman Ramachandran Sony Pictures Television-backed Eleventh Hour Films (“Alex Rider,” “The Magpie Murders”) have revealed two more projects in development and made a senior creative hire. “The Man In The Back Seat” (working title) a series development from novelist David Peace (“Red Riding”) and actor-writer, Ted Reilly, is the company’s first foray into the original true-crime genre. Based on events documented in the book “The Long Silence” by Paul Stickler, who serves as a consultant, the series will follow the 1962 criminal case, where after the longest trial in British legal history, James Hanratty was executed for the murder of Michael Gregsten, and the rape and attempted murder of Valerie Storie.

‘I Love the Craziness of This Industry’: Nikolaj Lie Kaas Affectionately Spoofs Danish Showbiz in New Series ‘Agent’

Marta Balaga Nikolaj Lie Kaas’ series “Agent,” shown at Berlinale Series, centers around Joe, who has high hopes for his famous clients. But it’s not another remake of a certain French smash. “I started writing it before ‘Call My Agent!’ even came out. Then I saw it on Netflix and went: ‘Oh, for f**k’s sake…’,” Danish actor-turned-director tells Variety. “I guess I was just longing for a comedy, something that would also have depth, heart and all that stuff. I said to myself: ‘Nikolaj, you are being a bitch about it. Create something yourself, instead of asking others to do it.’”

‘Next from Spain’: First Looks of New Series from Alex de la Iglesia, ‘Los Javis,’ Movistar+ and Aina Clotet

Berlinale Series Market kicks off Monday as Spanish series “The Snow Girl,” a missing girl suspense thriller produced by Spain’s Atípica Films, has attracted huge heat for Netflix, punching 101.7 million hours watched in its first three weeks. Doing so, it ranked as the streamer’s No. 1 non-English show in the world over Jan. 30 – Feb. 5.  In all, Spain has more shows and movies in Netflix’s all time non-English Top 10s than any other country in the world, seven to France’s two, for example.  Spain, it could be argued, has cracked online. But its drama series industry wants to ring more options.

Gina Rodriguez on Moving to Oregon, Becoming a Parent, and Leading a New Series

Not Dead Yet starts off with a very sobering statement: “Local woman, 37, ruins old life.” That woman—Nell Serrano, who is played by Rodriguez—went all in on love until it “slapped her in the face,” then returned to her old job at a dying newspaper where she's relegated to working in the custodial closet to spend her days writing obituaries. All to make ends meet and start life over. And yet, there's something uplifting about this story.“This woman has just kind of sunken into despair, and now she goes on this journey of self-reflection and growth,” Rodriguez tells Glamour from the set on her last day of filming season one.
