Guild of Music Supervisors Gives Top Honors to ‘Everything Everywhere,’ ‘Elvis,’ ‘Stranger Things’ and More

Lily Moayeri The Guild of Music Supervisors Awards celebrated its 13th annual awards ceremony at L.A.’s Wiltern Theatre Sunday night, with “Everything Everywhere All at Once” continuing its winning streak across awards shows. The film picked up honors for both the Oscar contender “This Is Life” as the best song written and/or recorded for a film and for music supervision for a film budgeted under $25 million. Also scoring top honors were music supervisors or writers for “Elvis,” “Stranger Things,” “Insecure,” ““Battlefield 2042 DLC” and “Saint’s Row V,” among other movies, television shows, video games and ad campaigns. It was a glitzy return for the organization which recognizes and provides extensive support for the unsung music heroes behind the screens for film, television, video games, advertising and trailers. Coming together in-person after the awards were held virtually for the last three years, the cross section of music supervisors, sync agents, publishing company representatives, actors and musicians in attendance brought their A-Game to the red carpet and the three levels of the historic venue, as well as to its expansive stage—and also took advantage of the opportunity to let loose and mingle with their colleagues.

‘Glass Onion’ Star Jessica Henwick on Writing, Directing BAFTA-Nominated Short ‘Bus Girl’ (EXCLUSIVE)

K.J. Yossman Jessica Henwick is still riding high from the BAFTA awards when she sits down with Variety to discuss her pivot to writing and directing. Her short film, “Bus Girl,” didn’t win in the Best Live Action Short category on the night but Henwick appears genuinely thrilled simply to have been nominated for the project, which she wrote, directed and starred in. “I really had very low expectations for ‘Bus Girl,’ my first short,” Henwick says. “I did not think it would get into festivals, I certainly didn’t think it would get the BAFTA nomination. I literally just did it because I wanted to see: am I capable or is [directing] a fantasy? Because I didn’t go to film school or drama school. I dropped out of school when I was 16 and I have no formal qualifications at all. So it really was a trial by fire.”

she won the AACTA (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts) for the film, the first time a woman had ever won for cinematography in film at the “Australian Oscars.” In her speech, Walker emphasized that she hoped her win served to open the door for many more women in the camera department. During a lively conversation for TheWrap Screening Series of “Elvis,” Walker was joined by producer-costume designer-production designer Catherine Martin and producer Gail Berman to discuss the hard work, craft, grit (and “girl power”) that went into making the dynamic, colorful biopic. In speaking about the gender disparity in her field, Walker pointed out Luhrmann deserves credit for hiring her to lens a feature film in the first place, 15 years ago.

‘Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio’ Producers Alex Bulkley & Corey Campodonico On Bringing Del Toro’s Vision To Life

After joining Guillermo del Toro on the project over 10 years ago, producers Alex Bulkley and Corey Campodonico finally got to see the fruits of their labor when Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio premiered last year. Del Toro’s Netflix adaptation of the Carlo Collodi story takes place in 1930s Italy, during the Fascist reign of Benito Mussolini. In this story, woodcarver Geppetto (David Bradley) loses his son Carlo in an aerial bombing and carves Pinocchio (Gregory Mann) from the tree at his son’s grave. Bulkley and Campodonico’s animation studio, ShadowMachine, was responsible for the stop-motion animation of the film, and the pair were incredibly excited to go on this long journey with del Toro.

‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio’ Takes Top Honors at the 50th Annie Awards: Full Winners List

Terry Flores “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” has picked up another award on its march to the Oscars, nabbing the feature prize at the 50th Annie Awards, presented by ASIFA-Hollywood, on Saturday evening. In addition to being named the top film by the animation industry, “Pinocchio” led the winners’ list with five trophies overall, including the award for best direction for del Toro and fellow director Mark Gustafson. The stop-motion movie also picked up wins for music (Alexandre Desplat, Roeban Katz, del Toro and Patrick McHale), production design (Curt Enderle and Guy Davis) and character design (Tucker Barrie). Del Toro, who came directly from the PGA Awards where he received the trophy for producing ‘Pinocchio,’ was thrilled to win the Annie for direction alongside Gustafson. “Can I say this? I wanted the fucking Annie so much. It’s the most gorgeous thing in the world!” He noted that the Annies ceremony was the one place that he didn’t have to point out that animation is a medium and not a genre. “What I can say is about ‘Pinocchio’ is that it was done by artists, and the animators were treated like cast and not technicians.”

From Dave Bautista Collapsing in ‘Glass Onion’ to Military Marches in ‘All Quiet on the Western Front,’ Stunt Coordinators Detail ‘Invisible’ Stunt Work

Zoe Hewitt It’s not often in a career that having your hard work go by unnoticed is actually the ultimate compliment. Movie crews, almost uniformly across any filmmaking disciplines, find themselves in this nebulous zone where the less their work stands out, the more accolades they get from critics, peers and audiences. If costumes stand out, the characters feel a bit off. If set decoration draws attention, it doesn’t seem like the story is grounded in a real-life environment.   Stunts may be the only exception to the rule. Seeing daring escapades on screen becomes the bait to get audiences into seats. Who didn’t have great expectations of what Tom Cruise and company would pull off in “Top Gun: Maverick”?
