An Epic Emmy Traffic Jam Is Brewing as ‘House of the Dragon,’ ‘Rings of Power,’ Others Set Their Sights on 2023

When we created this list six years ago, we were determined to recognize the new faces of storytellers, executives and entrepreneurs who were reinventing New York. A lot has changed since then, but the city’s can-do spirit is as potent as ever.

Outlander fans were thrilled to bits as the show announced a series of faces that would be returning for season seven but it appears that one cast member has been replaced.

EJ Panaligan editor Paramount+ announced a premiere date for their upcoming original series “Wolf Pack,” as well as a new teaser trailer and additional casting for the show, Variety has exclusively learned. Revealing details at New York Comic Con, Paramount+ shared news that “Wolf Pack” would premiere Thursday, January 26, 2023, the same day as “Teen Wolf: The Movie.” Alongside announced cast such as Sarah Michelle Gellar, Armani Jackson, Rodrigo Santoro, Bella Shepard and more, the streamer shared that Bailey Stender, Chase Liefeld, Hollie Bahar, Lanny Joon, Rio Mangini, Stella Smith, Zack Nelson and James Martinez have joined the show in recurring roles. Additional casting includes Amy Pietz, Bria Brimmer, John L. Adams and Sean Philip Glasgow.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” concludes its inaugural season, Amazon Prime Video debuted a fiery new trailer for the season finale that promises “all will be revealed.”  The trailer — which first screened at New York Comic-Con on Friday, as part of Prime Video’s panel for “The Rings of Power” — was light on new footage from the finale, save for a telling glimpse at what appears to be Celebrimbor’s forge, where the titular Rings of Power will eventually be created. Otherwise, the trailer recaps many of the biggest developments through the first season, while promising that while Mordor is rising, at lease some heroes “will fall” — and Sauron’s true identity will finally be revealed.

Broadcast TV got a little pep in its step last year thanks to two freshman sitcom phenoms: ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” and CBS’ “Ghosts.” When asked to tout their new wares, several network execs instead opted to shine more spotlight on returning shows they hope to keep buzzing as sophomore sensations. It’s time for Variety’s annual fall check-in with network heads across broadcast, cable and streaming — although how to do that proves tricky these days. Many execs’ gigs transcend platforms, after all — like Disney’s Craig Erwich, who serves as entertainment president for both ABC and Hulu, or the NBCUniversal duo of Susan Rovner and Frances Berwick, whose domain stretches across programming for broadcast, network and streaming.

Peacock has ordered a movie based on the Dan Harmon comedy “Community,” bringing back original stars Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong to check in on what the gang from Greendale has been up to since the show ended in 2015. Without sharing specifics, Peacock and Sony Pictures TV, which jointly announced the greenlight on Friday, described the negotiations for Peacock to secure the movie as “heavily competitive.” As part of the deal, Peacock has also acquired non-exclusive rights to the full six-season “Community” library, which can also be found on Netflix and Hulu.

Judy Woodruff, anchor and managing editor of “PBS NewsHour” was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.  The award was presented by Robert MacNeil, co-creator and former co-anchor of the NewsHour. “Tonight’s Emmy winners exemplify broadcast journalism at its best, reporting that values fact over fiction, accountability over advocacy, and that champions the advance of truth in the interest of the communities we all serve”, said Terry O’Reilly, Chairman, NATAS. “America has never needed its journalists more than today. We congratulate tonight’s honorees and thank them for the indispensable service they provide to our nation.”

Celebrities have taken to social media to pay tribute to Coolio after it was announced that the rapper had died at the age of 59. No cause of death was given by his manager Jarez Posey, who confirmed the news to Deadline.

Starting Jan. 15, 2023, the MGM-owned pay cable network and streaming outlet will take its parent company’s name and be known as MGM+. The rebrand comes following Amazon’s $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM in March. ‘We have felt for some time that this is the best service that many people have never heard of,” says Michael Wright, who has been president of Epix since 2017 and will now serve as head of MGM+. “Other than individual shows, the service has never been marketed. Now you have this incredibly powerful, loud name that means something to people. You could spend five years and $100 million trying to launch a new brand, and you wouldn’t have the brand equity that you get with MGM. It’s really something of a gift.”

In his new role, Lappin will help oversee the show’s daily creative direction; his promotion was announced on Tuesday by executive producers Stephen Colbert and Tom Purcell. Lappin was most recently senior supervising producer. As co-executive producer, he’ll be part of a team that also includes co-EPs Denise Rehrig and Tanya Michenvich Bracco. Together, they’re all helping Colbert and Purcell run the ship in the absence of former executive producer Chris Licht, who departed “The Late Show” earlier this year to take over CNN as its CEO.

Presenters set to appear at the news ceremony include Linsey Davis (ABC News), Margaret Brennan (CBS News), Omar Jimenez (CNN), Morgan Radford (NBC News), Julio Vaqueiro (Noticias Telemundo), Teresa Rodrigues (Univision) and Paola Ramos (Vice News).

It’s actually “Game of Thrones,” the parent series that’s not even airing right now, since it ended in 2019. On the Nielsen Streaming Top 10 chart between Aug. 22 to 28, “House of the Dragon” ranked sixth place, with 741 million minutes viewed. Meanwhile, “Game of Thrones” took the third spot, with 909 million minutes of viewing time on HBO Max.

The ceremony will return to the Beverly Hilton in time for its 80th anniversary on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT. The telecast will also be streamed live on Peacock.According to the network, that date was chosen due to NFL football that Sunday, while the NCAA National Championship Game takes place that Monday — leaving NBC to push the Globes to Tuesday. (The Critics Choice Awards has already staked out the following Sunday, Jan. 15, for its event.)NBC declined comment on terms of the deal, including whether the show’s $60 million license fee had been cut. But it’s clear a renegotiation had taken place, as NBC’s new deal with the Globes is just a one-year agreement, “which allows the HFPA and DCP to explore new opportunities for domestic and global distribution across a variety of platforms in the future,” according to the press release announcing the return.

Variety, producers confirmed the use of the ring shapes in the opening sequences: ‘We have the nine for men, the seven for the dwarves, the three rings for the elves, and a single ring. All those combinations are through there, and they’re at the beginning and end. We start with those, and they are building other things, and then we end with them.
