A man in his 50s has been taken to hospital. No further details about his condition or the nature of the incident have been released at this stage.
An eyewitness told the M.E.N: "At the moment police have closed Aldi. Police are at the door. They say it's an ongoing incident."
The M.E.N. understands a member of staff contacted emergency services after the man fell ill at the supermarket. One witness, who works in a nearby nail salon, said: “Three ambulances and loads of police cars went speeding past.
"We had no clue what was going on.” Another added: “A load of people came into the Bulls Head as I was having a pint and said it was swarming with police outside Aldi and the officers went running inside.”
Officers left the scene by 5.30pm and the supermarket, which usually shuts at 10pm, remains closed this evening. Aldi has been approached for comment.
