ABBA have denied rumours that they will reunite for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 in their native Sweden, on what would be the 50th anniversary of them winning the contest with Waterloo.
Dashing the hopes of Eurovision fans everywhere, ABBA svengalis Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Anderson spoke to the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire on last night's Newsnight, where they ruled out an in-person, on-stage reunion with Anni-Frid and Agnetha.
Following Loreen's record-breaking victory at Eurovision 2023 with the emotional trance smash Tattoo, the contest will be returning to Sweden next year, with Loreen herself hoping it will take place in Stockholm, the worldwide centre of pop music.
But if you thought this was the perfect time for an ABBA reunion, do we have (bad!) news for you.
"I don't want to [reunite]," Andersson said, "and if I don't want to, the others won't. It's the same for all four of us - someone says, 'no' - it's a no."
Ulvaeus added: "We can celebrate 50 years of ABBA without us being on stage."
Since their split in 1980s, ABBA have been notoriously private, only reuniting in person a handful of times; once for the premiere of Mamma Mia! in 2008 and at the opening night for their ABBA Voyage show, which is running in London.
Of course, the sell-out show - which features digitally renders 'ABBA'tars - was released in the wake of the group's much-hyped reunion record, Voyage, which became their 10th UK Number 1 album.
Voyage - which was named one of the biggest albums of 2021 - also contained the foursome's landmark 20th UK Top 10 single Don't Shut Me Down, their first in nearly 40 years.
While we all mourn the absence of ABBA at Eurovision 2024, you can revisit ABBA's extensive UK chart history here.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor is on the shortlist to become the UK’s entry to Eurovision 2024, according to a source. The country was represented by Mae Muller at this month’s home competition in Liverpool, scoring just a few points. As Mail Online report, a source believes that only one name is currently being touted for next year’s entry. The source said: A source shared: “At the moment there is only one artist on the BBC’s list for Eurovision 2024, and they don’t intend to add to it.“Sophie Ellis-Bextor is seen as the ideal fit for the contest – she’s a great singer and performer, and she is already known to audiences, both straight and gay, across Europe.”Speaking to NME backstage after her performance at Liverpool’s Eurovision Village on ‘EuroEve’, the night before the Song Contest’s Grand Final in the city (Friday, May 12), Ellis-Bextor discussed her chances of appearing as the UK’s entry in 2024.“I think doing it is an amazing opportunity, and that Mae Muller will smash it, but it was never the right thing at the right time – and I’m a big believer in serendipity like that,” she said. She continued: “Recent times have seen Eurovision artists release amazing songs outside of it and these amazing careers being launched. Sam Ryder’s approach to it last year where we always just so positive and upbeat just saw him really seize the opportunity a bit.
