Chris Frantz Sire Records co-founder Seymour Stein was indisputably one of the greatest music executives of all time, with a career that spanned six decades and a rare ear for talent that led Madonna, Talking Heads, Lou Reed, Ice-T, Depeche Mode, the Pretenders, the Smiths, and many others to his label. Stein, who died on April 2 at the age of 80, is remembered here by Chris Frantz, drummer of Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club, who, with Tina Weymouth (now his wife), Jerry Harrison and of course David Byrne, signed with the label late in 1976. Seymour told this story many times. His first visit to CBGB’s on the Bowery was to see the Ramones. His wife Linda insisted that he see them because they were something new and fabulous and she thought he should sign them, which he did. He was standing outside the club on the sidewalk speaking with [Patti Smith’s longtime guitarist] Lenny Kaye, waiting for Ramones to go on when he heard the support band begin to play. “When my love stands next to your love….”
A24 Acquires Talking Heads 1984 Concert Film ‘Stop Making Sense’, Will Restore In 4K For Theatrical Release

In the wake of delivering Talking Heads frontman David Byrne his second Oscar nomination with Everything Everywhere All at Once, A24 has acquired worldwide rights to his former band’s 1984 cult hit concert pic, Stop Making Sense, for theatrical release later this year.
A24 will give the Jonathan Demme directed movie (the filmmaker’s first concert directed pic) a 4K restoration. If A24 can polish this up in time, boy, this would be a fun midnight film for Cannes. The news comes off the heels of A24 acquiring and re-releasing Darren Aronofsky’s Pi.
Stop Making Sense stars core band members David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison along with Bernie Worrell, Alex Weir, Steve Scales, Lynn Mabry and Edna Holt. The live performance was shot over the course of three nights at Hollywood’s Pantages Theater in December of 1983 and features Talking Heads’ most memorable songs including “Burning Down the House,” “Life During Wartime,” “Take Me to the River,” “Psycho Killer,” and “Once in a Lifetime.” The band, whose style was a blend of art-punk-funk rock, were propelled by legendary producer Brian Eno, whose collaborations count works with David Bowie, U2 and Coldplay.
The Talking Heads beamed in a statement about the news, “There was a band. There was a concert. This must be the movie!” The band broke up in 1991, and played briefly at a 2002 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction. Byrne told us recently on Deadline’s Crew Call, ” we’re not going to do it;” meaning the Talking Heads are never getting back together again.

Sony Pictures will partner with Apple on the theatrical rollout. “Napoleon” stars Joaquin Phoenix as the French emperor and military leader. Phoenix previously teamed with Scott on 2000’s mega-hit “Gladiator,” so there’s a track record there. But this film won’t be all Waterloo, all the time. In addition to epic battles, “Napoleon” will also look at the visionary commander’s volatile relationship with his wife, Josephine, who is played by Vanessa Kirby. Apple also released a first look image (above) from the film featuring Phoenix on horseback, saber unsheathed.
